Awkwardness; frustration; desperation; reluctance to commit; the feeling that you will never find “the one”.  How many of you have felt these emotions while in the initial stages of dating someone?  Did you know that as a first time homebuyer you are very likely to experience them during your home search?  Let me explain…

I work with a lot of first time homebuyers and I find that each one has similar, albeit unrealistic, expectations when it comes to finding their first home. Many aren’t even sure what they want and want to look at EVERYTHING.  Then after seeing a few disappointing properties, they tend to get discouraged easily. Anyone out there experienced a string of bad first dates?  *raises hand*  Here is where the comparison to home shopping can be made. Each time you go to view a home, it’s like a first date. You have high expectations, you’re scrutinizing every feature, and you may leave worried that even if you like that home, you are wondering if there isn’t an even BETTER home out there somewhere.

After viewing a few homes, I hear the frustration in my clients’ voices. This is when I take them aside and ask them, “would you marry the first man/woman you went on a date with?”  The resounding answer is “No!” My next question is, “Why should finding your first home be any different?”  We tend to get in such a rush to put down roots, we end up putting undue pressure on ourselves and complicating the home search process.   Here are a few tips for you to consider:

1. Make a list of must-have features that are important to you

2. Take your time; expect to “kiss a few frogs” before you find a home that appeals to you

3. When you do find a home that has potential and feels right, don’t pass it up simply because you’re worried you’ll miss out on something better!

4. As your Realtor I’m here to help you succeed; if you’re not getting the results you want, then it’s time to have an honest discussion (warning to the men out there, it may involve talking about your feelings, don’t be afraid!)

My hope is that by starting with these concepts in mind, that you will have a smoother start and less anxiety going into your first home search.  When you're ready to start "dating" homes, give me a call so I can start introducing you to some prime candidates!
